Book Launch

Today is the day. My little book is now out in the world.

I have mixed feelings. I always knew – on some level – that my first solo effort would be about animals. But I also thought it would be speculative fiction as well. Life is always throwing surprises at you.

Reviews:

Summer Brook Spring is an amazing book as it really captures the essence of living in Queensland. I love how the character of Freya is so relatable to me and how the girls are so different yet get along so well. My personal favourite part of the story is when the girls camp out with the calf and its mother. I just find it so heart-warming. Overall it is an amazing book for all ages. Logan (10)

When I first started reading this book I could tell that it was going to be one of the best books based in Australia that I have ever read, and it was! I do find it annoying how the father wants to take the Nan back to London though but I would guess you meant us to feel that way about it. I also think Freya is brave for doing the things she did in the first week being there because personally I would never sleep in half a shed with a calf, the calf’s mother and a girl I met within the week. Now to recommend this book to all genders, ages 8-12 Taylor (11)

The Courier Mail article

Well, our book launch attracted the attention of our local newspaper. The single photo makes me look insane, but in a nice way.

Pre-Launch Preparation

My author’s photo … not a book in sight.

The Springfield Writers Group (Queensland, Australia) is launching its newest anthology this Saturday afternoon at the Springfield Library (Orion Shopping Centre, Springfield Central). The Launch starts at 1PM. All welcome.

The genre of my story is something new for me. It is both science fiction, fantasy, with a touch of romance. I shy away from writing romance; I envy the skill and technique of confident romance writers. I get too embarrassed.

If you can’t make the launch, you can purchase the book online at Booktopia.

Organising a Book Launch

Launch night 03

Most of the authors with Councillor David Morrison of Ipswich (our local member). Missing is Jo Sparrow (who was working) and Susan Ruth (ill health).

Last week, my writing group held a book launch for our anthology. When I was a baby writer, I didn’t really think much about book launches. If I did think about them at all, I thought they were arranged by the publisher as a favour to their writer; sort of a pat on the head and a ‘well done’ occasion. How wrong could one woman be?

The book launch is a celebration, in the sense the book debuts in the real world. You get to show off the culmination of everyone’s efforts. However, it is also the main thrust of the marketing campaign.

Our launch wasn’t as polished as the infographic above. We did post pictures of the cover online and had a cover reveal event. The writing group did have a big say in the final version of the cover, and we did a themed party for the launch (I made comet-decorated muffins).

This the first launch where I was part of the planning committee and not just an attendee. It went very well, from my point of view. Every new experience adds to my learning curve. I am toying with the idea of self publishing a book next year, mainly to add to my experience in the publishing field. You learn best by doing, making mistakes, and having surprising successes.

More Exciting Times

Group

That is me on the left of the picture, in the hat.

This next week is going to be very exciting … and amazing, fabulous, and wonderful.

Tomorrow, it is the Christmas meeting for the Springfield Writers Group, but it won’t be the penultimate event for the year. Next Thursday, we will be launching our anthology.

Every writing group has its own dynamic. My group doesn’t ask anyone for member’s fees, but we do expect our members to actually participate in the group on some level. Not everyone can make it to meetings, of course. But sharing useful (or amusing) articles to the group page on Facebook counts as participation. Being available to beta-read a story or act as a cheering squad is participation. Helping out at the launch counts as participation!

I am very proud of the professional vibe you get from our anthology. If it was put on a shelf in a bookshop, it wouldn’t look amateur or out of place. The stories in it are all high quality, even if they are in handful of different genres. Every story has a professional level of editorial polish.

As well, my article came out in the Queensland Writers Centre magazine this week. I’m in good company with Nick Earls and Trent Jamieson.

This year, I have really ‘felt’ like a writer’. I am putting that down to treating the writing as a profession and a job. As well, I spent more time going to writing-related events, which meant I was mixing with more writers. The QWC Christmas party occurs on the night after the launch! Two big nights in a row, all about writers and books. Oh, how I will suffer…

So, the book launch is not just a celebration of our anthology. For me, it is a celebration of a year where I’ve had a great many small wins.
