I attended the Gold Coast Supanova on Sunday, and the Steampunk community was well supported, both by attendees and by Steampunk stall holders. What I really enjoyed was seeing how many newcomers were embracing the Steampunk Aesthetic, and how the regular suspects went all out with their cosplay.

As you can see, there was a large range of inspiration for these various cosplays, including fairy tale mash-ups and Star Trek Mash-ups.

  1. It is good to see a lot more adventurous costuming this year. Our SEQ mob have been a bit conventional up until now (Well: compared to our Kiwi cousins; the only comparison I can authoritatively make).
Getting away from the established, and rather rather narrow, band of steampunk archetypes is a good thing.

  2. Oh, and a further comment. I noted the word ‘supported’ in your intro and perked up, wondering what Supanova management had especially done this year.
    Was disappointed.
It’s probably okay to now acknowledge that I have repeatedly tried to give them (sell them) the ‘Steampunk Strides’ brand and concept – but to absolutely no avail (despite getting the name and email of the very best person in their organisation).
It seems that Supanova is consistently ignoring an increasingly significant sub-culture. They could do so much more – turning it into a feature. Celebrities, a ‘Hallmark Event’ (parade and prizes), even a dedicated corner.
They fail. They continue to fail.

  3. Wow. I just love how blogging takes me on amazing journeys of discovery. I have always loved dressing up and costumes and these look amazing. So much fun as well and supporting your genre. xx Rowena
